4 Ways Kim Kardashian Was Problematic at the Met Gala

The Kardashian/Jenner clan aren’t exactly synonymous with the word “reliability” (we see that excessive editing, Khloe), but we can always depend on Kim Kardashian to offer up some madness to dissect when it comes to significant cultural events.

And for once, it had nothing to do with Kanye

This time, Kim stepped firmly into the ring, opting to wear Marilyn Monroe’s infamous ‘Happy Birthday, Mr President’ dress, which has increased in value exponentially from the $1.44k Monroe originally paid for it to be created by designer Jean-Louis in 1962, to the staggering $4.8mil coughed up by Ripley’s Believe It Not in 2016.

A quick Google search will tell you that Marilyn Monroe was born in 1926, a good 36 years after the Gilded Age… So, let’s bring us to Kim Kardashian’s first Met Gala faux pas:

1. Kim Kardashian’s outfit wasn’t even on the ‘Gilded Glamour’ theme

It would be wrong to point fingers solely at Kim for this one, as it transpires that a good sum of attendees failed to hit the mark when it came to fitting the above theme criteria. In fact, Twitter was awash with criticism that celebrities should have been rejected from the event had they not properly committed to the particular look, given the amount of people who seemingly didn’t even try. Kim’s sister Kourtney Kardashian also came under scrutiny in this Buzzfeed post, as she revealed she “honestly didn’t really think about it”.

2. Kim Kardashian openly bragged about losing 16lbs in 3 weeks to fit into Marilyn Monroe’s dress

Coming from a woman who has been consistently accused of Blackfishing over the years – and is now bizarrely amidst rumours that she’s reversing her bum implant procedures – to discover that Kim purposely “lost 16lbs in three weeks” to slim into a white woman’s dress as the dress originally didn’t fit properly was some kind of flex.

Just when we were starting to show steps in the right direction when it comes to rejecting diet culture, trust a Kardashian to send us hurtling back to 2010. Tabloid writers don’t even need to embellish when celebrities are now writing damaging clickbait headlines for them.

Claiming that she didn’t starve herself, but that she “would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, completely cut out all sugar and all carbs, and just eat the cleanest veggies and protein“; she even offering up tips for disordered eating as the icing on the cake – that she wasn’t allowed to eat.

3. Kim Kardashian Wore Pleaser Heels with Marilyn Monroe’s Dress

Don’t get me wrong, I love a Pleaser – but, teamed with a $4.8 million, notoriously delicate homage to a woman who was chewed and spat out by the patriarchy? The disrespect. Kardashian revealed that the dress was only worn for the main entrance of the Met Gala event, but imagine stacking it in perspex platform heels and tearing into an actual artefact of history.

4. Kim Kardashian Didn’t Even Try To Replicate Marilyn Monroe’s Hair

Yeah sure, she dyed it platinum blonde allegedly for the event, but why bother with all that follicle damage if you’re just going to scrape the whole lot back instead of leaning into a true Marilyn look with her trademark coiffed locks?

Amusingly, a 2017 Interview cover saw Kardashian fully leaning into replicating another ironically-linked figure from the 60s for – Jackie Kennedy Onassis – which was “meant to cause controversy“, all the way down to a vintage-styled wig. Good enough for a random editorial, but not worth the effort for the Met Gala?

What were your thoughts on the Met Gala looks for 2022? Was Kim Kardashian the worst offender, or did someone else grind your sartorial gears this year?
