NEWS: ELNfashion is moving.

June 15, 2014

I have news. I have colossal news and, my sweet Mary Jesus and Joseph (paying homage to Grandma there: this post wouldn’t exist without you), you would not believe how psyched I am. The second half of yesterday was spent in a perpetual state of on-the-brink-of-awesome tears and, despite fending them off, I still went to bed with exhausted little piggy eyes and a racing brain. So, what’s happened/happening, you ask? Well… after spending the last six months nurturing an unrelenting sense of financial doom, and fearing that I’d end up stuck back in a box room at my mum’s after university, I finally discovered: I can move to London! It must be the karma train after this monstrosity of a year I’ve had, but everything seems to be aligning amazingly – I came into some money (for the second time ever, I ain’t no trust-fund baby, believe me), and now I’m going to be viewing flats this Wednesday with a view to move in sometime next month. Excited isn’t the word!

Now I have two options. Given I have two job interviews in London on Wednesday, I can hope that I’ll score one of those and start on the career ladder straight away. Otherwise, I’m going to use this (incredibly rare) time in my life to take advantage of the situation (of, uh, being taken advantage of by the fashion industry) and seek out fancy internships whilst I still have enough income to stay alive and, most importantly, well dressed. Today I’m calling out to you wonderful fashion folk and asking:

  • Where’s best to live? I’m eyeing up flats in Kensington and Holloway as we speak.
  • Where are all my London-dwelling fashion bloggers at?
  • Am I going to survive? (sod that, I’m ‘ard as nails)
  • Also – is there ANYWHERE in London where you can get a rental and still get a cat?

I cannot wait to properly start my life, get my blog at the forefront of my life and get really involved in Britain’s heart of the fashion industry. Has anyone else got any stories of London life they’d like to bestow upon me? Something tells me I might need some guidance…

Enjoy my posts? Don’t miss a beat on Bloglovin’!

OOTD: Day 3 of LCM.

January 8, 2014

I might be typing, but I have a sneaking suspicion that my eyes may still be in bed. London Collections: Men is drawing to a close today and, trust me – I’ve had a blast. I’m not going to go into the details here, as an update will be posted later on, but here’s my last outfit of LCM (all that matters is that the mouse at the tube station yesterday didn’t get me).

We’re Getting Missguided This New Year.

December 29, 2013

This year I am determined to do something semi-awesome for New Years. Last year, I saw in the new year whilst panned out in bed with my best friend, eating noodles and watching a shit film – it was nice, but quite so lame that we didn’t even realise that it’d turned midnight for a good ten minutes – oops. However, after deliberating through trips to Edinburgh for Hogmanay, or crashing some hip’n’happenin’ jive in London – it’s probably going to be a night ’round Leigh town, or Manchester at best. Either way, there’s no excuse for not looking your best, even if you are dribbling noodles down your chin watching Gossip Girl – here are my favourite Missguided New Years picks – currently with 30% off! (Enter ‘NYE2014’ at checkout)

  • Loba Velvet Open Back Playsuit – £24.99 – with 30% off: £17.50

If you want to look slick, sophisticated, and like you’re about to develop the onset of pneumonia: this playsuit is for you. If you don’t want the latter: wear a coat and some thick black tights, please. If you caught my Christmas Haul post, you’ll know I’m a big fan of velvet right now and this piece is definitely no exception. Team with a deep plum lipstick and cat eye flicks – oh, and a kimono, if you’re feeling floaty.

  • Kitia Silky Keyhole Maxi Dress – £29.99 – with 30% off: £21

Tit tape at the ready, ladies – we’re in for a bumpy ride. Hot damn though, this dress is worth the fuss: silky jewel green with a cheeky keyhole cut? Count me in. Probably better for a night on the swanky tiles, than perhaps wandering the streets of Wigan town centre – if you’re heading out further afield, or to an indoor party, this one’s for you. Not sure I’d be able to brave a family party without a bra wearing this number, though… Your call.

  • Inuno Sequin Playsuit – £39.99 – with 30% off: £28

Remember what I was saying about pneumonia? Urr yeah, here’s another – but it’s so pretty! However, you definitely want to be wearing this piece at an indoor party – I can’t imagine the perils of being trapped in the thronging crowds at the Edinburgh street party, freezing cold, in a playsuit… Imagine how difficult it’ll be to go to the loo in. Definitely, definitely wear this one at an indoor event – preferably one with lots of strobe lights: those sequins deserve it.

I hope you all have a brilliant time, and I hope I end up doing too! Here’s an extra treat: free next day UK delivery when you enter ‘NYFREE’. Have fun, guys.

Pipe-dreamin’: The Ideal Post-Graduation Apartment.

December 16, 2013

I’m now officially one-fat-third through my final university year and holy mother of maracas, it is absolutely terrifying. The prospect of being my own little entity, free from the cushy constraints of university life and academia, is as horrendously fear-inducing as it is exciting. However, softening the blow is the thought of escaping Lancaster to further, more hip’n’happening planes *cough* London *cough* and fabricating my dream flat (this is the biggest bullshit post ever written, I’m more likely to be living in my mother’s wheelie bin with my mangy persian cat, writing freelance pieces about erectile dysfunction). Anyyyyway, if the gods of goodwill somehow decide that I finally need my big break and I get a fancy PR/journalist internship in Central London, here are some of the drool-inducing pieces I definitely wouldn’t mind adorning my apartment: (this would be so motivating, were it not so easy to while away literal hours)

  • Urban Outfitters – Phlora Double Duvet Set – £50

I’m a big fan of florals but not the uber feminine look that often comes with them – so this graphic print with bright, anti-pastel accents is a must-have. Only problem I foresee would be my inability to drink a cup of tea in bed without throwing it all over the duvet cover – bright white with tea stains. Sacrilege. This would pair beautifully with a set of jewel violet black-out curtains.

WISHLIST: June

June 12, 2013

1. Dahlia Ava Tassel Hem Dress with Lace Detail – £68How quirky is this dress? I have the perfect fedora and platform boots for it. It would also go beautifully with #4 – the RegalRose ring.

2. ASOS shirt – £18 | I’ve been traipsing around the high street looking for a really simple plain white shirt to wear with the plethora of collar pins/statement necklaces I’ve been coveting recently. Thanks to Clara from CountessDuBlush for this find!

3. Boohoo Annie Oversized Vintage Jumper – £15 | I’d like this in coral and jade, please and thank you. The coral is on trend with the current pastel madness and is one of the very few colours that actually makes my pale skin look semi radiant, or at least alive.

4. RegalRose Zuri Turquoise Knuckle Ring – £17 | Massive fan of this brands stuff, not a particular fan of their price tags though. After losing my first midi ring last week, I’m scared to buy this. But I must. I must. Big on the stacking/OTT rings trend at the moment.

5. Company Magazine Fashion Forum Ticket – £25 | Plus travelling, plus food – argh. If I get a job within the next couple of days and secure some proper income, I am so very there. I’m also looking for someone to car pool with – I don’t have a car myself, but I did this with some bloggers to London Fashion Week last year and it worked really well and was cost-effective! Let me know if you fancy it!

6. Urban Outfitters Casio Pink Mini Digital Watch – £20 | The black Casio watch in a similar design has had me hovering over the ‘buy’ button for years, but this pink one might just have me sold. I’ve seen one in a mint green at Button & Bow however, that I might nab instead!

7. Boohoo Arwen Extreme Suedette Flatform Wedge – £25 | Why do I have to have pathetically small size-3 feet, which are always the first size to sell out? I want these and I want them badly. They’re the perfect ‘ALT’ernative to sandals if you’re a bit too gothy for them, like me. I’m on these as soon as they’re back in.

Internship at ELLE Magazine.

May 28, 2013

Today I applied for the 2013 Edited by the Interns competition on ELLEUK.com, which led me to recall that I’d never actually gotten around to doing a write-up about the week internship that I did there last October. My trip to London/Cambridge was so jam-packed crazy that I don’t even remember the couple of weeks after I returned home – I think I just did a lot of lamenting and hibernating. I managed to snag a placement from ELLE’s Market Editor Bonnie Rakhit after meeting her at a River Island x ELLE event in Manchester last summer, which you can read more about here. After a week or so of feverish email inbox refreshing, I finally got offered a week’s placement at ELLE and started planning (mentally spending) for my London visit.

London is phenomenal. I know it’s terribly, terribly cliché but I’m such a ridiculous city girl and thinking back to trips I’ve done to New York and London literally make me well up. I’m barely joking when I say that I’d chop off a limb, or lick a kitten heel to teleport back to either of them. Big cities bring out some weirdly confident Ebony, who seems to shrivel up in the dreary humdrum of Lancaster city, so I cannot wait until I escape next year and can move to the capital. Anyway, I digress. I’m fortunate enough to have a lovely aunt and uncle living near Camden who let me stay with them for the week, which was an absolute lifesaver because, dang – that city is expensive. If you find an internship but are struggling to find cheap accommodation, you should look into houseshares or hosts, with schemes like Room For Tea.

Step 1: Buy an Oyster Card. If you’re in the same London-novice boat that I was, you’ll be sounding the ‘Oy-what?’ card somewhere about now. The Oyster card system allows you to top up a card, akin to a phone top-up, which lets you roam the city through the underground/buses/other public transport – lifesaver. Not always the best of systems when you’re running for the bus and it’s at the bottom of a bag even Mary Poppins would think you’re a twat for carrying, though. Also not helpful when you’re late out of work, trying to get your clothes packed to catch the last train back to Cambridge – and stuck in a Friday rush-hour queue to top it up, in Oxford Street station. Even that didn’t dampen my chipper Northern-bastard-in-London spirit.

Step 2: Be proficient with a map (by which, I mean a very small, inconspicuous map) or don’t bother going without a smartphone with maps. Bizarrely, I found my way to the office without a hitch on the first day, but found myself completely lost on the third morning – running around like a prat with the biggest, most tourist-y map you’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, I’d just had my iPhone stolen a couple of weeks before my trip, so I was relying on my trusty old Nokia E71, which was pants. Oh, and you might want to get friendly with the tube system too – you will probably go out and get drunk, and you will undoubtedly nearly end up in the wrong place.

Step 3: If you have a Northern accent, you have special preparatory homework before you should go to a fashion internship. I worked with quick-talking European ladies from whom ‘Dries Van Noten’ rolled off the tongue to an almost sexy degree, whereas, my confused equivalent was a more ‘Uh, ‘DREES VAN NOHHHTEN’? And I don’t even have a particularly Northern accent. You need to be damn quick with a pen and the sticky notes too – shiz moves fast in these places, with no room for mistake.

Step 4: You might have to get up close and personal with some celebrities. No, I didn’t get my staple on with One Direction or braid Taylor Swift’s hair – but, I did return underwear that Victoria Beckham had worn on a shoot for the March issue. Geddin’, if that’s what you’re into. You’re going to be doing a lot of this returning too: I literally spent the entire week, bar about an hour (accumulative running up and down to the post-room time) doing returns from shoots. If you’re a fashion-lover though – in the clutches of endless Jimmy Choos and hiding in the jewelled cavern of the fashion cupboard – you’ll stay in your element 9 – 5.

Step 5: Go to Leon. Your mouth will thank me. So will your stomach, come 4pm when you’re salivating with hunger into a Moschino clutch. Trust me, the Pret superfood salad just isn’t going to cut it.

Step 6: Open your mouth and don’t be afraid to dress how you want to. I’m going to contradict myself with this one: I wore a really outlandish but arguably awesome hipster/Japanese-y/secretary/plain-crazy ensemble one day, and got complimented on it by one of the actual writers – which I was absolutely elated about – but instead of being all ‘Oh yeah, thanks! It’s from *insert plethora of stores*’, I giggled like a schoolgirl, squeaked ‘Thanks!’ and dived back into my fashion cupboard of solitude and safety. On the other hand, I did redeem myself towards the end of the week, when one of the other interns was working on a website feature with Bonnie, and I jumped in with a suggestion for them and she loved it. I spent the rest of the evening calling up my mum/dad/best friend/cat squealing that I’d got one whole line on the site.

Nervous and over-secretaried to Hell on the first day.

Step 7: Name drop me, please? I want back there. Pronto.

This Week’s Featured Bloggers.

May 28, 2013

I’ve been thinking for a while how great it’d be to do a weekly post where I find three beauty/fashion bloggers to feature on my site. This way, we all get to know each other better, get some discussions going and make some new friends! I’m also a little nosy so it’ll be nice to find out random stuff, like what other peoples’ favourite shoe of the season is, or what they love most about blogging. If you’d like to get involved with the next post, follow me on Twitter @Ebzo!

Kelly of A Thing of Beauty

How long have you been blogging for?

I’ve been blogging since April 2011, so 2 years now.

What’s your favourite beauty product, ever?

My favorite beauty product, ever, would have to be my elf Golden Bronzer. I know it’s only $3, but it gives such an understated glow that I’ve gotten so many compliments on. And, it’s so inexpensive, to boot!

What are you dying to get your hands on this season, fashion-wise?

Fashion-wise, I’m dying to get my hands on more of those sheer, sleeveless shirts. They’re my new fashion must-have this summer because they’re perfect to tuck into shorts and versatile enough to be worn in the colder season.

What’s one trend you’ll be avoiding?

The one trend I’ll be avoiding are galaxy print leggings. Sorry, but just not my style. I’d prefer for the universe to stay in the sky & off my legs!

What are your inspirations behind writing your blog?

I’m an aspiring beauty/fashion editor and when I started collecting a lot of beauty products, I felt it was time to start blogging and putting myself out there.

What’re your plans for the summer?

Currently I’m a working student, but I plan to continue with posting on my main beauty blog, A Thing of Beauty, and I’m actually hoping to launch a new lifestyle blog in the next month!

If you could pick one pair of shoes to wear forever, what would they be?

Definitely my neon Skechers tennis shoes-I get so many compliments when I wear them because they’re black with neon accents and the most comfortable things I’ve ever put on my feet!

Amy of The Pretrender

How long have you been blogging for?

A year next month, it’s flown by!

What’s your favourite beauty product, ever?

Benefit High Beam. I literally didn’t know what I did before I discovered it. It lights my entire face up, and is great for those mornings when I’ve had one too many margaritas the night before!

What are you dying to get your hands on this season, fashion-wise?

I NEED the topshop elephant printed joggers in my life. Devastatingly, they’ve been out of stock for ages 🙁

What’s one trend you’ll be avoiding?

Denim dungarees. They make me look about 12.

What are your inspirations behind writing your blog?

I like to share my style, so I usually empty my wardrobe and create new outfits, and go from there.

What’re your plans for the summer?

I’m moving to london next month so my summer will probably consist of window shopping, job hunting and living off tins of beans!

If you could pick one pair of shoes to wear forever, what would they be?

My high tops. I’m a trainers girl through and through.

Amy of AmyJaneAlice

How long have you been blogging for?

I have been blogging since the 19th of February this year! I’m so proud of how far I have come in such a short space of time 🙂

What’s your favourite beauty product, ever?

This is such a hard question, argh! I think my favourite product would have to be liquid eyeliner. I don’t have a favourite brand in particular but I often repurchase the Collection 2000 and Rimmel liquid eyeliners.

What are you dying to get your hands on this season, fashion-wise?

I want the Topshop high waisted Mom jeans so much! I have a huge amount of love for all things high waisted, and these would be the perfect addition to my collection.

What’s one trend you’ll be avoiding?

I don’t think I’ll be wearing much white this summer, because I don’t really suit it. It suits so many people and is a gorgeous trend, but it tends to make me look quite big!

What are your inspirations behind writing your blog?

I get so much inspiration from many different sources while writing my blog. The biggest comes from my love of reading and writing. If I didn’t love reading and writing so much I’d find it difficult to enjoy writing a blog. I get inspiration from other bloggers, shops and celebrities too.

What’re your plans for the summer?

Over Summer I’ll most likely be working and saving up for when I hopefully start university in September; I’ve already mentally spent it all 🙁 On Sunday’s I’ll probably be going on days out with the family, boyfriend and friends or just relaxing in the good weather I hope we have!

If you could pick one pair of shoes to wear forever, what would they be?

This is SUCH a hard question! I love wearing my Fred Perry pumps or my Converse because they’re so comfy and versatile – you can wear them with so many different kinds of outfits. Then again, I also wear my heeled boots quite often, as they make me feel a little taller (I’m only 5″3!) and a bit older! I think I’d have to go for my Fred Perry pumps because they can be dressed up or down and are a lot comfier than heeled boots!

Ebony’s Trip To Cambridge/London: Day 1.

November 9, 2012

Hello! It’s finally time to get posting again, I think! I’m currently sat on the Virgin ‘Super’ Voyager enroute to Cambridge – though, arguably, it’s the slowest one I’ve ever travelled on. If you’re not a regular reader of my blog, I’m off on a little journey this week: firstly, I’m going to Cambridge Uni for the weekend to stay with my ‘bezzie mate’ Heather, before going on to London on Sunday in preparation for my week of work experience at Elle magazine starting Monday. I somehow managed to get the train this morning (granted, an hour later than originally planned), despite not having packed until about 9:30 – oops. Packed all the essentials: Kindle, MacBook, phone, nail varnish remover pads… Lush facemasks, y’know. Although, I have stupidly packed practically an entire week’s worth of clothes in a paper Selfridges bag – and it’s intermittently raining. Hopefully all my new get-up won’t end up all over Cambridge train station.

Today’s plan is to change trains at Birmingham then straight off to Cambridge – hopefully with time to do a little shopping when I get there, as we’re supposed to be going to an 80s-themed night out tonight (they call nights out ‘bops’, how strange?). I’m very much looking forward to checking out Cambridge, it looks absolutely divine from pictures – though I’m not sure my hodgepodge Northern/Welsh/Irishy accent is going to go down a storm with the posh and mighty. I’m sure I’ll update with some hilarious miscommunication stories before Sunday.

Here’s me, awkwardly taking an awkward picture on the train, feeling awkward:

An ELNfashion Update.

November 1, 2012

I notice that, again, I’ve been really quiet on the blogging front recently – primarily due to the fact that I’ve been catching up on the past couple of weeks at uni that I’ve missed. Apologies, apologies, I’m finally managing to get everything back in order so I’ll be back to posting regularly very soon. I’ve also had my iPhone stolen recently, if you were wondering why I’m barely ever on Twitter either, these days. Here are some posts that I’m looking to write hopefully before the end of the week:

  • Urban Outfitters Gets Uber Criticism – Bought way too many dodgy products from there recently.
  • Urban Outfitters Haul – Picking the decent stuff from the crap.
  • Saying Hello To My New Macbook Air – Apple or Windows? Windows 8 perks vs. Mac functionality.
  • Halloween Feature – Potentially not the most interesting post, as we didn’t even dress up – haha.
  • Planning for my work experience at ELLE in London in 11 days!
  • Topshop/Urban Outfitters/Miss Selfridge/New Look New In Feature.
  • Cambridge Satchel Bag Lovin’.
  • Alex Christopher Event Write-Up.
  • Brat & Suzie Review.

And I’m sure I’ll think of plenty more soon.

Post-Work Haul (That Should Never Happen; Always Will)

October 3, 2012

Hope you’re all enjoying this wonderful downpour we’ve been blessed with today – I’ve had a lot of fun watching you all squirming around in the floods whilst in the warmth of work! Anyway, I ended up going shopping after work – joys of working in the city centre and here are some buys and sale alerts:
